Someday or One Day (Chinese: 想見你; pinyin: Xiǎngjiàn Nǐ; lit. 'Want to See You') is a Taiwanese TV drama released in 2019[1] directed by Huang Tien-Jen (黃天仁), starring Alice Ko, Greg Hsu, Patrick Shih and Kenny Yen. It was produced by Fox Networks Group Asia Pacific, Hualien Media International, and Three Phoenixes Production Co. Ltd. (三鳳製作), and it received NT$22 million in subsidy from the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development.[2] The drama was aired on CTV every Sunday at 10:00 pm, from November 17, 2019, to February 16, 2020,[3] and then it was jointly screened on Star Chinese Channel every other Saturday, with behind-the-scenes footage titled "想見你 不見不散" (lit. 'Want to see you - don't leave until we see each other') following each episode of the drama. Synopsis[edit]The plot involves a 27-year-old woman Huang Yu-Hsuan (Alice Ko), who longs to be able to see her deceased boyfriend Wang Quan-Sheng (Greg Hsu), who had died in an airplane accident. She misses him deeply and frequently sends him text messages, hoping that he will somehow be able to see. One day, Huang Yu-Hsuan receives a mysterious parcel containing an old-school Walkman portable cassette player and a cassette tape of Wu Bai's album The End of Love. While heading home on a bus, she falls asleep as she listens to Last Dance through the cassette tape on the Walkman. Suddenly, the song brings her to 1998, taking over the body of a high school girl named Chen Yun-Ru, a girl who looks exactly like herself. The previous night, Chen Yun-Ru had been hit by a car. Huang Yu-Hsuan regains consciousness—in Yun-Ru's body—and sees a boy beside her hospital bed, who looks exactly the same as her late boyfriend. At first, she believes she has finally been reunited with her beloved Wang Quan-Sheng, however, she later finds out that things are not actually how they appeared to be on the surface. Trapped in what appears to be the past, living another person's life, through various mysteries of time and space, Huang Yu-Hsuan tries to change the fate of Chen Yun-Ru from both the past and the future. Production[edit]Background and creation[edit]The screenwriters, Chien Chi-feng and Lin Hsin-hui, have worked together closely for many years. They were nominated for "Best Writing for a Television Series" in the Golden Bell Awards for the series "Ex-Boyfriend" and "Marry Me, or Not?". They reunited with the director, Huang Tien-jen, after working with him on "What Is Love" and "Attention, Love!". At the preview of the series, Chien revealed the creative origins of "Someday Or One Day" and how one of the producers, Ma Yi-ting, wanted to make a "drama that would make people cry without knowing it". Chien was troubled by this problem for a long time, until one day he had a dream: "In my dream, I was writing in a hurry; writing about the love story of a male and a female protagonist who have been together for 13 years. The drama used flashbacks extensively, taking them from age 29 back to their high school days, showing their mutual love." He told Lin about his dream, and they composed and wrote the story down together. They developed these ideas for three years, and spent a year writing the script. The result was described as "A script written with God guiding the screenwriter's hands".[5][6] Ma has stated that the preparation was the most difficult part of the drama. Since the leading actors needed to play two separate characters in the series, the production staff needed to recruit skilled actors, but also wanted to find a fresh combination of leads. Another challenge was posed by the two time periods portrayed in the drama, 1998 and 2019. This made it necessary to recreate the atmosphere of 1998 in some scenes, but in a way that was not too abrupt.[7][2] In addition, Ma has mentioned that the production company, Three Phoenixes Production, gave the screenwriters freedom during the creative process of writing the script. The screenwriters also expressed that they were given control of the script; though they adhered to the guidelines from the production company, they did not need to make changes or amendments to the script, and it retained their original ideas and concepts. The distribution company was not found until after the script was completed. The screenwriters expressed in an interview that they like to challenge themselves with topics that others dare not write about. Although "Someday Or One Day" contains elements of romance, time travel, and mystery-suspense, the real subject is adolescent identity. Lin said that each of the three young protagonists has some special trait, but they're unable to take their traits seriously. She stated that the troubles of adolescents are easily overlooked by others who think they are too young to have real worries, but in fact this problem is very serious. Screenwriter Chien continued saying that although people seem to think that everyone should be brave and not feel hurt, these are very important feelings that everyone experiences. This is why they chose to spend an entire episode at the beginning to describe how the female protagonist suppressed her sadness; "If you can't understand that kind of sadness as a screenwriter, you will never write a good script", he said. He realized at that time how easy it is to ignore others' hurt feelings.[8] In addition, they mentioned that although the plot unfolds gradually through a broken time and space, their ideas were very clear when they wrote the script. Chien said that he and Lin needed to persuade not just the director, but everyone. This became specially evident in the seventh episode: audiences, constrained by the rules of past TV series, would expect that the world would collapse if two souls meet in person. But the writers did not think this way, and wanted to break the old framework and create new game rules for "Someday Or One Day".[9] Regarding the inspiration for the character names in the drama, Chien said that he took names from those around him, and Lin agreed to use them. Wang Quan-Sheng was Chien's classmate in elementary school, Mo Jun-Jie was a middle school classmate, and Li Zi-Wei and Chen Yun-Ru were his classmates in high school. The names were exactly the same, only Huang Yu-Xuan was pieced together slowly from scratch.[10] The drama was originally titled "Read but ignored (已讀不回)", but was subsequently changed to "Love, Read but ignored (愛，已讀不回)". Originally, "Want to see you（想見你）" was the subtitle of the script, but it eventually became the main title instead. As the protagonists were able to travel through time and space because of their determination to see each other, the English title was named "Someday or One Day", which represents "There is a possibility that one day when the future is the past, and the past is also the future?", and "This matter of wanting to see you, is not just on a certain day, it is from the past to the future, and from the future to the past".[11][12] Filming[edit]The scenes involving the university where Huang and Wang (Li) attended were filmed at Kainan University. The scenes with the lawn where Li and Chen (Huang) sit side by side and have a heart-to-heart talk were filmed at Luodong Sports Park. Filming for "Someday Or One Day" began officially on December 27, 2018, and concluded on May 10, 2019, lasting five months.[13] After the script was completed, the whole crew participated in the discussion of choosing filming locations. Since the drama is set in two separate time periods, 1998 and 2019, the number of locations needed is doubled, making the process of location scouting quite time-consuming. The crew spent three months surveying hundreds of houses before finding one that was compatible with the time period and suitable for Chen Yun-Ru's home. The director, Huang Tien-jen, said the house was actually quite large and so, for the convenience of filming, he sealed some corridors and made compartments to make it look smaller. Likewise, a long time was spent scouting the record store, but ultimately, Huang decided on the final location as soon as he saw the place. They remodeled and changed the interior furnishings of the place to resemble a record store in the 90s. Huang and the producer, Ma Yi-Ting, attached great importance to bringing each scene to life. Huang wanted the props to be moved between scenes. He explained that in the house where the protagonists lived, it would be unrealistic for the shoes to be always placed in the same place, or for the calendar to always be on the same page. Therefore, he insisted that for every scene, all the small, quotidian objects have to be shifted once.[14] Regarding the atrium that represented Chen Yun-Ru's mind, the art director had proposed several plans, while the director proposed building an atrium with a Möbius ring to symbolize the endlessness and the circulation of thoughts and resurfacing memories. He revealed that the concept of the atrium was discussed for a long time, and the decision was not finalized until one month prior to the filming. The Möbius ring was what he ideally wanted for the design of the atrium - a circular arc-shaped scene with dynamic projection to portray Chen pacing back and forth inside, unable to get out of it. However, this was too difficult to create, and therefore he decided to use white curtains combined with motionless photos and dynamic projection for the scene. The scenes of the atrium were filmed on the last three days of filming because it required a lot of material, and the static images on the walls of the atrium needed to be filmed earlier so that they could be included. The producer, Ma Yi-Ting, said that she decided to build a house with white curtains combined with the static images and dynamic projection after much consideration, and found a team of concept artists to orchestrate the scene. She emphasized that if the images projected on the walls were rendered by post-processing, the visual would be easily distorted, and Ko would have to rely on her imagination when acting out the scenes. She thought that if she went ahead with the decision to process the images later, she would be sacrificing a realistic performance from the actress.[15] Miao-Shou-Gong, Anping was the place where Li bought white sugar rice pudding, and encountered little Huang. The drama was filmed in various cities and towns in Taiwan. The scenes of Huang Yu-Xuan as an office worker were mainly filmed in Taipei, while the characters’ campus life in 1998 was filmed in Tainan. During the press conference at the premiere, the actors revealed that in order to film the scenes from 1998, Ko, Hsu, Shih and Yen lived together in Tainan for two months, which allowed them to continue to interact with each other everyday after filming finished. Hsu said that while in Tianan the rapport and affection between the actors grew a lot. Ko said that she often felt weary while reading the script during that time, and she would walk around the neighborhood to relax and separate herself from Li and Mo, so it was a surprise to see them again when she opened the door. Shih described how everyone really became a family during the time they spent together filming in Tainan.[16][17][18] After the drama was broadcast, Ko, Hsu, Shih and the crew members returned to Tainan to visit the filming locations.[19] The scenes in the drama attracted many fans to also visit the filming locations.[20][21] Actors and roles[edit]Ko Chia-yen, who won the Golden Bell Award for Best Actress in the 51st Golden Bell Awards for the drama "Marry Me, or Not?", played the dual role of Huang Yu-Xuan and Chen Yun-Ru. This was her second time working with the screenwriters. The producer, Ma Yi-ting, talked about the auditions conducted for the selection of the cast, and said that Ko's eyes were very clear and weren't polluted by the environment, even after working in the industry for so many years, which was needed for portraying the role of Chen in the drama. The screenwriters revealed that Ko was the archetype that they had in mind at the time of writing the script because she has the traits of both Huang and Chen. The characters of Huang and Chen are substantially different, the former is lively and confident, while the latter is introverted and quiet. Ko resonated with Chen's role because of her own experience. She couldn't help but cry after filming the scene where Chen really wants to grasp the feeling of being happy for once, but instead finds that everyone, even Li, the person she has a crush on, likes Huang. She thinks that girls tend to feel awkward and lock themselves up during adolescence. She said that she used to be very introverted during her school days, and always felt out of place. But eventually, she had to interact with a lot of people because of work, and acting was the only way to explore her soul. She encouraged people experiencing the same to embrace everything about their selves and feel the changes in their attitude.[22] She considers "Someday Or One Day" to be one of the hardest film projects she has worked on. Nevertheless, it made her very happy that she could experience emotions that she hadn't felt before. After carefully studying the role, she found herself in a melancholic state for a long time while filming. At home she was unable to prepare for her scenes, as she would cry once she read the script.[23] She said that she didn't have a sense of reality on the last day of filming. She felt that she could keep filming. This drama also allowed her to find her passion for acting. She said it's rare to encounter a story and like it so much that you throw your whole heart and soul into the performance.[13] Greg Hsu as Wang Quan-Sheng and Li Zi-Wei. Greg Hsu, nominated for the Golden Bell Award for Best Supporting Actor in the 52nd Golden Bell Awards for the drama "Have You Ever Fallen in Love, Miss Jiang?", also played a dual role in the drama as both Wang Quan-Sheng and Li Zi-Wei. This was his second time working with the director and screenwriter after the drama "Attention, Love!". The producer revealed that she had seen him many years ago, just before he acted in Qseries（植劇場）, and she had thought that he had a special temperament that other actors do not have, something both good and evil, very clean, and he made people feel like he had an old soul inside. The screenwriter Jian also revealed the reason for choosing Hsu that was originally proposed by the producer Ma, to let the leading role play by the newcomer Hsu, and he said that he had felt the charm of him when he previously worked with Hsu, and praised his portrayals of Wang Quan-Sheng and Li Zi-Wei. Li's role spans a range from 17 years old to the end of his 30s. He had to perform both as a bright, young high schooler and as a mature adult shaped by the vicissitudes he has experienced. It was a very difficult challenges for Hsu, especially as he had taken part in this drama immediately after he filmed the movie "A Sun" and the drama "Nowhere Man". Therefore, he did not have a considerable amount of time to prepare for the role. But Jian thought that the most important thing was to conform to the mentality and state of the character.[24][25] Hsu interpreted the character of Wang as more feminine and delicate than compared to Li's bright and clear character. He referenced the movies he had watched as the template to build Wang's character, and revealed that Wang would treat himself as a girl, and therefore, his pace of walking would be slower and his manners would be more gentle. While filming the drama, Hsu tried to show the contrast of Wang's and Li's personalities as best as he could.[26] Patrick Shih as Mo Jun-Jie, Li Zi-Wei's best friend. Patrick Shih（施柏宇）, who played the role of Mo Jun-Jie, had gained attention with his role in "HIStory 2 - Crossing the Line". Screenwriter Jian revealed at the screening that Shih passed the audition with a unanimous vote due to his outstanding performance. Producer Ma also believed that his own characteristics were quite consistent with Mo.[27][28] Mo had to wear a hearing aid due to an ear disorder since childhood, and had suffered with bullying since then. Shih revealed that he had just put his own experience into the role as he also had the experience of being bullied in his school days.[29] He described Mo as a blank piece of paper, who does not ask for return of the contribution to Chen. The audience can see the purest form of love and his simplicity in him. Shih lacked experience in acting compared to the others, and thus, put a lot of pressure on himself during filming. He felt as though he was dragging down his fellow actors and the crew, and while everyone was getting more and more into their character's state of mind, he felt he was stagnant. He even hid in the closet to review himself, and gradually integrated into the role with the help of Ko and Hsu. He also said that he had learned a lot of performing skills after filming this drama.[30] Kenny Yen portrayed Hsieh Tsung-Ju and Hsieh Chih-Chi. Kenny Yen（顏毓麟）, who portrayed Xieh Zong-Ru（謝宗儒）and Xie Zhi-Qi（謝芝齊）, also worked with the director for the second time after "Life Plan A and B". In an interview, he expressed that he was able to interpret the role by relying on the director's guidance and the circumstances of the scene. He also shared the most difficult part of filming was when he had a scene where he felt his neck was being pinched by an "invisible power", and it was stopping him to speak his lines. He said although he was scared at the moment, it helped him fit in with the emotions of the role, and build more tension in the drama. He had a breakthrough performance with role as the psychiatrist, Xie Zhi-Qi, and the director praised him as the next Anthony Wong.[31] Yen said that he had thought Xie Zhi-Qi would have a romance scene with Ko's character, and discovered the truth after he read the script. He remembered that the director had said that it would have a dark side with this character, and it was those part of his memories would be removed from his brain and the fragments of his abnormalities will be deleted.[32] Yi-Wen Yen（嚴藝文）, the actress that won Best Actress in the 50th Golden Bell Awards for the drama "Angel's Radio", played the role of Wu Ying-Chan, the mother of Chen Yun-Ru and Chen Si-Yuan, and the elder sister of Wu Wen-Lei. Different from the image of a solemn mother in the past, she portrayed as a warm mother this time, who had suffered from an affair with her husband, and shouldered the burden of household expenses and running the karaoke business alone in order to raise her children. Yen explained that she has never had a child, and in fact could not fully understand the mentality of being a mother. However, the actress empathized with the sentiments she had while reading the script, and understood the messages her role was given to express, and tried to get it as close as possible. She treated her role as a "woman", rather than "a mother" when she was trying to figure out the role. After she had analyzed the character's personality, she found out her notable characteristics, and did her best to show them. She participated in the filming of this drama while she was directing the drama "The Making of an Ordinary Woman（俗女養成記）" in Tainan. [23][33][34] Han Chang（張翰）, who portrayed the younger brother of Wu Ying-Chan and the uncle of Chen Yun-Ru and Chen Si-Yuen. The actor was shortlisted for the Golden Bell Award for the Taiwanese movie "Upstream" and a student showcase named as "One Step Away（一步之遙）" which was broadcast on public television. He is a key figure in the plot, who acts as a confidant to both Huang Yu-Xuan and Li Zi-Wei and is the owner of the 32 Record Store and 32 Cafe.[35] He-Xuan Lin（林鶴軒） won Best Supporting Actor at the Taipei Film Awards for the film "Secrets in The Hot Spring（切小金家的旅館）". He plays the role of Chen Si-Yuan, the younger brother of Chen Yun-Ru, who is a secondary school student in puberty. Da-her said that he felt great pressure to interpret the role of a secondary school student, and was worried about acting like a fool just because of his young age. In order to comply with the appearance of his role, he often applied facial treatments along with taking supplements, which resulted in him getting acne afterwards, making him more like a secondary school student. The scene that impressed him the most was the last scene with his sister, who bid goodbye to him and asked him to learn to grow up. He stated that he was moved deeply when he read the script.[36] Broadcast[edit]On 23 February 2019, the press conference of the drama was held.[1] In addition, a campus premiere was held on 27 September of the same year, with first published of the 3-minute of international edition trailer.[37] The preview screening of the drama was held on 5 November of the same year, a number of media and artist friends were invited, and the 40-minute of footage was broadcast live.[38][39] The press conference of the premiere was held on 15 November the same year, and the 17-minute version of the trailer was released for the first time.[40] The live interactions with audiences were held at drama's community site before and after each weekly episodes that broadcast on CTV.[41] The finale was originally selected to be watched with the audience together with the actors in the cinema, however it was canceled due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic,[42] and the live broadcast was changed to broadcast proceed on Taiwanese Yahoo.[43][44] On 15 April 2020, a post-credits scene concert was held by the TME Live, named "Want to See You Someday Or One Day", the cast members Ko Chia-yen, Greg Hsu and Patrick Shih participated in the webcast online, and the singers Shi Shi, Nine Chen and the band 831 performed their respective soundtracks live. Wu Bai & China Blue were the last to perform, with many of their classic songs. When the interlude "Last Dance" was performed by Wu Bai, the three actors became the audience, and reproduced the classic movement of the song, which was covering their eyes with their fingers when he sang the lyrics "So close your eyes, just for a moment（所以暫時將妳眼睛閉了起來）".[45] Broadcast channels[edit]The drama was broadcast on the main frequency of CTV starting from 17 November 2019 to 16 February 2020, at every Sunday night 22:00 to 23:30, then rebroadcast at 00:00am every other Sunday; The Star Chinese Channel was broadcast from 23 November 2019 to 22 February 2020 at the same time every Saturday, and replay on the next day.[46] CTi Entertainment was aired on every Sunday night at 22:00, starting from 1 March 2020, and re-broadcast on every other Saturday.[47] The channel of WeLike (위라이크) at Korea was aired for two consecutive episodes available on every Saturdays and Sundays at 11 pm KST, starting on 18 April 2020.[48] The Star Chinese Channel was re-broadcast the drama at 10 pm on every Saturday from 16 May 2020, and re-broadcast on the next day (Sunday) at 2 pm and 8 pm.[49] The drama had been broadcast on J2 channel at 21:35 to 22:35 on every Mondays to Fridays (except Wednesdays), starting from 28 May to 7 July 2020, and then re-broadcast on 03:05, replayed it at 13:00 on the following day of every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and every other Mondays. Some fragments of this broadcast version had been cut away and split into 21 episodes, 60 minutes (including advertisement) per episode of show time.[50] Japan's Family Drama Channel will be broadcast the drama at 2 am JST on every Thursday commencing from 16 July 2020, and the aired version will be split into 26 episodes.[51] Terrestrial/Cable/Satellite[edit]The following is a simplified schedule of the drama.
OTT Platforms[edit]The show was made available on iQIYI Taiwan, LINE TV, myVideo at 00:00 after CTV's first broadcast every Sunday; FOX+ and the Star Chinese Channel from every Saturday after CTV's first broadcast; KKTV would be available at 00:00 every Sunday beginning from 24 November 2019, and Hami Video and CHT MOD were available on every Sunday;[46] myTV SUPER in Hong Kong listed the show on every Sunday starting from 18 November 2019.[52] The C-POP TV from Japan commenced broadcast from 6 December 2019, with each of the original 13 episodes being split into 26 episodes.[53][54] iQIYI and Tencent Video from Mainland China listed the show on every Sunday, starting from 22 December at 23:00,[55][56] with each episodes being reviewed by the Mainland media authority and it was split into 26 episodes with several scenes being deleted due to viewing guidelines.
Reviewed in Mainland China[edit]The drama was repackaged in simplified Chinese when the streaming platforms of Mainland China began to air simultaneously with Taiwan after the fifth episode had been broadcast. At the same time, the pictures with the meaning of sovereignty from Taiwan, such as the passport, flag, identity card, police badge, and maps etc. were edited by being blocked and cropped or by deleting fragments.[60] In addition, some scenes from the episodes were deleted during the broadcast in mainland China,[60] for example, the kisses of protagonists who were in high school, it had been deleted due to their puppy love; the entire plot of the homosexuality involving Wang had been cut out, retaining only the shots in the sea; the shots of masturbation and cruelty to animals from Hsieh Chih-Chi was deleted too. Wu Bai's song "Last Dance" which was released in 1996, became popular again after the drama was broadcast. Wu Bai & China Blue's "Last Dance" was throughout the episode, the song which became very popular after the drama had been aired.
