《荒漠甘泉》作者简介

考门夫人(Mrs. Charles E. Cowman),原名丽蒂·伯德(Lettie Bard),1870年生于美国伊利诺斯州,1901年随丈夫查理·考门前往东亚,办院讲学,足迹遍及中国、韩国和日本。后因考门先生心脏病发,二人被迫返回美国。他们相互支撑,凭借虔诚的信念和巨大的毅力一次次度过生命难关。第一本《荒漠甘泉》的出版,出自于她这些特殊的经历与感悟。接下来的二十五年里,她又陆续出版了七本著作,如《黑门山路》、《奔向日出》、《谷中清泉》等书。1960年的复活节,考门夫人逝世,享年九十岁。

《荒漠甘泉》出版前言

《荒漠甘泉》的作者考门夫人,原名丽蒂·伯德(Lettie Bard),1870年生于美国伊利诺斯州,1901年随丈夫查理·考门前往东亚,办院讲学。后考门先生罹患心脏病,深受煎熬,考门夫人悉心照料。在丈夫与疾病斗争期间,考门夫人开始提笔写作,以日记形式记录二人六年来的心路历程,后来汇集而成《荒漠甘泉》。

《荒漠甘泉》以圣经经文为据,摘录了考门夫人所喜爱的司布真、马德胜、爱德华滋等多人的著述或语录,结合作者自身的经历思考,抒写了一年的读经心得和人生感悟。每日小品都是一篇精美的散文,或讲述故事,寓意深远;或直抒胸臆,饱含慧见;或寓情于景,慰藉心灵。

《荒漠甘泉》的成书过程即显明了此书着力之处——切伟大的事业都以患难铺路;“欢欢喜喜的忍耐”是最美丽的忍耐;现在我们所遭遇的,都是出于天父的美意;得胜和得安息的方法,就是直接从天父手中接受他所给你的每一个环境、每一个试炼,并享受其中互相效力的益处;安静并非懒惰,乃是从信靠产生的一种镇静;信心乃是说:“这件事是神完成的,所以必定是对我有益的。”《荒漠甘泉》以其清新隽永的语言、丰富深刻的意蕴、真切动人的情感、亲切引导的方式,安慰和鼓舞了无数身处困境的人们,被誉为“一座支取不尽的心灵宝库,一泓鲜活甜美的生命甘泉”。

《荒漠甘泉》首次出版于1920年,发行以后一时洛阳纸贵,畅销不辍,仅英文版当年即已售出200万册以上,后被翻译成几十种文字出版,影响深远。其中中文版发行最广,读者最多。最早的中文译本,是40年代宋美龄译给蒋介石研读所用。国内有信实、阳东的译本(如时代文艺2003年版,陕西师大2008年版等),文笔优美,颇受好评。团结出版社也先后于1998年、2009年两次出版此书。2010年中国市场出版社的口袋本《荒漠甘泉》,便于携带,销量可观。这些译本都将原著中的诗歌部分并行或略去,其它内容也各有删节,皆非足本。

这本中英文对照的《荒漠甘泉》,中文源自台湾道声出版社2008年新版,所用底本为宋美龄译本,经道声出版社编者删节加工。宋译本忠于原著,质朴有力,有很强的灵修味道,颇值涵咏。道声版精选了宋译本的精华,又无使篇章残断之失,字字珠玑,深得要旨。对此我们尽量不予改动,只在少数不符国内读者阅读习惯之处,参考英文原著作了些微处理。英文采用的底本是美国zondervan出版社1997年出版,James Reimann编辑的新版 Streams in the Desert,该编者也编过另一部经典著作《竭诚为主》。中文对照之英文的编选,原则上是依据中文版,删去英文版多余部分,个别地方为助益读者领略原著之精髓、章法之美感,未有删减。另外,道声版有三十余篇文章是出自其他作者之手,并非考门夫人原著中所有,这次我们依据英文原著将其重新编译。其中近十篇如4月25日、5月31日、6月11日、6月12日、7月28日、10月25日、11月14日等,则是首次译出,敬献于读者。编者不敏,疏漏错讹之处,敬请读者批评指正。是为前言。

一月十八日 反败为胜

感谢神!常率领我们在基督里夸胜。(哥林多后书2:14)

在人显著的失败中,神得着最完全的胜利。许多时候,仇敌似乎得胜了,神也容让它得胜;但到头来神终究铲除它所有的作为,彻底将它摧垮,正如圣经所说:“使恶人的道路颠倒”(诗篇146:9,直译)。如果神不让仇敌先得势,就不能给我们一个更大、更可夸的得胜。

三个希伯来青年被掷入火窑的故事,就是一个很好的例子。看起来,永活神的仆人似乎将陷入一败涂地的光景中了(许多时候,我们也有这样失败的光景,仇敌真是欢喜)。他们陷在火焰中,仇敌盼望看到他们在可怕的火焰中顷刻化成飞灰,万想不到他们竟在火窑中游行自如。这真使仇敌吃惊不已!尼布甲尼撒王叫他们从火中出来,他们头发没有烧焦,衣裳没有变色,也没有火燎的气味,“因为没有别神能这样施行拯救”(但以理书3:29)。

显著的失败结果,反是稀奇的胜利。

假定这三个希伯来青年失去了信心和勇气,在受困之时埋怨神说:“为什么不救我们脱离火窑呢?”他们定会被烧死,神也得不着荣耀了。今天在你的生活中,若正有一个极大的试炼,不要气馁、自认失败,仍要继续用信心借着那能使你得胜有余的主宣告胜利,荣耀的胜利立刻就要来了。我们应当知道:在一切神应许我们进入的艰难中,神在替我们制造机会,使我们在他里面学习信心的功课,借着主基督夸胜,大大荣耀他自己的名。

January 18

Thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ.(2 Corinthians 2:14)

God wins His greatest victories through apparent defeats.Very often the enemy seems to triumph for a season,and God allows it. But then He comes in and upsets the work of the enemy, overthrows the apparent victory,and as the Bible says,“frustrates the ways of the wicked” (Ps. 146:9). Consequently,He gives us a much greater victory than we would have known had He not allowed the enemy seemingly to triumph in the first place.

The story of the three Hebrew young men who were thrown into the fiery furnace is a familiar one.It looked as if the servants of the living God were going to suffer a terrible defeat.We have all been in situations where it seemed as though we were defeated, and the enemy rejoiced. They were thrown into the terrible flames while their enemies watched to see them burn.Yet the enemy was greatly astonished to see them walking around in the fire, enjoying themselves.Then King Nebuchadnezzar told them to come out of the fire.The enemy “crowded around them.They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched,and there was no smell of fire on them …for no other god can save in this way” (Dan. 3:27, 29).

This apparent defeat resulted in a miraculous victory.

Suppose these three men had lost their faith and courage and had complained, saying,“Why didnt God keep us out of the furnace!”They would have been burned,and God would not have been glorified. If there is a great trial in your life today, do not acknowledge it as a defeat. Instead, continue by faith to claim the victory through Him who is able to make you “more than conquerors”(Rom.8:37),and a glorious victory will soon be apparent. May we learn that in all the difficult places God takes us, He is giving us opportunities to exercise our faith in Him that will bring about blessed results and greatly glorify His name.

六月三日 渡我们

渡到那边去吧。(马可福音4:35)

就是遵着神的命令出去,我们还是不能期望不会遇见患难。主耶稣的门徒听从主的命令出去,他们还是遭遇了危险的暴风,甚至他们大声疾呼主的拯救。

虽然在我们极紧急的时候,主还耽延他的拯救,但是他的目的乃是要使我们的信心经过试炼,因而更增强,使我们的祷告更加虔诚,使我们得拯救的渴望更加迫切,使我们从此更重视主的拯救。

主给他们一个温柔的责备,说:“你们的信心何在?”意思是说,你们为什么不向狂风怒涛夸胜说:“你们不能伤害我们,因为主在船上呢!”

在日光中信靠比在风波中信靠,容易得多。若不经过试炼,我们绝不会知道自己有多少信心。

有了主的命令,虽然不能免去患难,然而主必拯救,只是迟早罢了。因为主绝不会口上说“我们渡到那边去吧”,而心中却任凭我们沉入海底。

June 3

Let us go over to the other side.(Mark 4:35)

Even though we follow Christ’s command, we should not expect to escape the storm.In this passage of Scripture,the disciples were obeying His command, yet they encountered the fiercest of storms and were in great danger of being drowned. In their distress, they cried out for Christ’s assistance.

Christ may delay coming to us during our times of distress, but it is simply so our faith may be tested and strengthened. His purpose is also that our prayers will be more powerful, our desire for deliverance will be greater, and when deliverance finally comes we will appreciate it more fully.

Gently rebuking His disciples,Christ asked,“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (v. 40). In effect, He was saying,“Why didn’t you face the storm victoriously and shout to the raging winds and rolling waves,‘You cannot harm us, for Christ, the mighty Savior, is on board’?”

Of course, it is much easier to trust God when the sun is shining than to trust Him when the storm is raging around us. Yet we will never know our level of genuine faith until it is tested in a fierce storm, and that is why our Savior is on board.

If you are ever to “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (Eph. 6:10), your strength will be born during a storm. With Christ in my vessel, I smile at the storm. Christ said,“Let us go over to the other side”—not “to the middle of the lake to be drowned.”

十一月六日 爱与管教

凡我所疼爱的,我就责备管教他。(启示录3:19)

受痛苦最剧烈的,常是最属灵的信徒,恩典获得最多的,也是受苦最多的人。苦难临到信徒,没有一次是偶然的,每一次都是受着父神指挥的。父神绝不随意冒险张弓发矢,他的每支箭都是带着一个特殊的使命出去的。——卡力尔

最属灵的基督徒都是曾经过烈火的。如果你要更认识神,必须从你现在的环境出来,让他引你经过荒野、炉火。

主啊,别的刑罚我都愿意受,只求你不要拿去我的十字架;求你叫我能服从你的旨意,叫我能爱你给我的十字架;求你给我那最能叫你满足的恩赐,在我身上按照你自己的旨意荣耀你的名。

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(Revelation 3:19) God selects the best and most notable of His servants for the best and most notable afflictions, for those who have received the most grace from Him are able to endure the most afflictions. In fact,an affliction hits a believer never by chance but by God’s divine direction. He does not haphazardly aim His arrows, for each one is on a special mission and touches only the heart for whom it is intended. Joseph Caryl

Christians with the most spiritual depth are generally those who have been taken through the most intense and deeply anguishing fires of the soul. If you have been praying to know more of Christ,do not be surprised if He leads you through the desert or through a furnace of pain.

Dear Lord, do not punish me by removing my cross from me.Instead,comfort me by leading me into submission to Your will and by causing me to love the cross.Give me only what will serve You best,and may it be used to reveal the greatest of all Your mercies:bringing glory to Your name through me,according to Your will.
